Why The Test Championship Uses A Percentage Table

A league table normally works because everyone plays the same schedule. Test cricket's championship cannot assume that, so it ranks by proportion instead.

The schedule is negotiated, not fixed

Series lengths in Test cricket are agreed bilaterally between boards, so one pairing may play five matches and another two. There is no common fixture list.

Any championship built on those series inherits the inequality. A team could accumulate more points simply by having agreed to play more cricket.

The percentage approach neutralizes that. What matters is the share of available points a team actually won, not how many opportunities it had.

Points are allocated per match within a series

Each match carries the same number of available points regardless of the series it belongs to, with defined splits for a win, a tie and a draw.

Keeping the per-match value constant is what allows series of different lengths to be compared. The series becomes a container rather than a unit of scoring.

A draw earning a fraction rather than nothing matters in a format where weather can remove days. Without it, rain would function as a penalty.

Deductions apply to the numerator

Over-rate penalties remove points already earned while leaving the available total unchanged, which lowers the percentage.

That asymmetry is deliberate. A sanction that reduced both figures would barely register, so the rule bites where standings are decided.

Teams have lost final places to accumulated deductions, which is the clearest evidence that the mechanism does what it was designed to do.

Home and away imbalance remains

Percentages fix the volume problem but not the difficulty problem. Playing a cycle weighted toward home conditions is a real advantage the table cannot see.

No weighting for opponent strength or venue is applied, partly because any such adjustment would require judgments the boards would dispute.

The championship therefore accepts a known imperfection in exchange for a rule everyone can verify. Transparency was chosen over precision.

The table changed how series are approached

A dead final Test in a decided series now carries championship value, which has reduced the number of matches played without consequence.

Captains also face a sharper calculation on the final day, since a draw is worth something but a win is worth considerably more.

Giving every Test a stake in a wider competition is the championship's real achievement. The percentage table is simply the arithmetic that makes it possible.

A backscreen on the big man broke the rulebook

For a long time the deep coverage was the closest thing basketball had to a safe answer. Keep the big near the rim, make the guard fight over the top, live with a mid range jumper. Then somebody put a screen on the retreating big himself, and safe stopped being safe.

The action is easy to describe. Standard ball screen on the wing. As the centre backs towards the paint, a third offensive player, usually whoever is guarded by the least reliable helper, sets a screen on him from behind. The big is now being asked to backpedal into a stationary body he cannot see. He fights through and arrives late, or he goes around and the roller has a straight line to the rim, or the defence switches and a guard is left trying to box out a centre.

What I like about it as a piece of design is that it attacks the coverage rather than the personnel. Most counters hunt the weak defender. This one punishes the strong one. The better your rim protector, the more committed he is to that retreat, and the more the screen behind him hurts.

Every defensive answer is uncomfortable. Pre switch the screener before contact, which needs two players to talk through crowd noise while both are watching the ball. Jump the big out to the level and refuse to be a stationary target, which gives up the pocket pass. Or tag the backscreener early with the low man, which by definition opens the corner you were trying to protect in the first place.

None of it is free, and that is the whole point. Good design does not manufacture an open shot. It manufactures a decision where every branch costs something, taken by a defender with a third of a second and eighteen thousand people shouting at him.

The version I would run more often is the fake. Show the screen, never set it, and let the big react to a threat that does not arrive. He hesitates for a beat. A beat is a layup.

Whoever first drew this up understood something coaches say far too rarely, which is that the most vulnerable man in any scheme is usually the one doing exactly what he was told to do.
