The tactical foul is a defensive skill and we should say so

Stopping a break with a deliberate trip is coached, rehearsed and rationed, and pretending otherwise makes the discussion dishonest.

Nobody puts it on a training plan with that name. It still gets trained.

Where and when to stop a counterattack by fouling is one of the more sophisticated decisions in defending, and it involves at least four inputs: the distance to your own goal, whether the shape behind you is set, the referee's tolerance so far, and how many cards you and your teammates are already carrying. Get any of them wrong and you are either sent off or the reason a break went the length of the pitch. That is not cynicism. That is a calculation, and it is made in under a second by players we describe as merely committed.

The mature version of the argument is that the laws already price this. A deliberate foul that stops a promising attack is a caution, and if the attack was a genuine scoring opportunity it is a red. The punishment exists, the referee applies it, and the defender accepts it as a cost. I find it strange that we then pretend the transaction is disgraceful. If the price is wrong, raise the price. Do not moralise at the person paying it.

Where I do have a problem is with the version teams have engineered to avoid the price. Rotating who commits the fouls so nobody accumulates cards, fouling at just below the threshold that draws a card, spreading the offences across four different midfielders in an hour. That is not one player making a judgement, it is a policy, and no referee can address it inside the current framework because each incident individually looks minor.

A team foul count with escalating consequences would fix it in a fortnight. Basketball worked this out decades ago and nobody thinks the team foul is exotic. Football will resist because it dislikes anything that looks like arithmetic on the scoreboard, and because the sides who benefit most from the current arrangement are usually the ones with a vote.

Meanwhile, if you are coaching a side that defends deep, teach it properly. Teach where the line is on the pitch beyond which you never foul, teach who is allowed to and who is not, and stop pretending the twelve seconds you just bought were an accident of enthusiasm.
