Here is the trouble with measuring lanes. Every public model I have seen is built on completed and attempted passes, because those are the events that exist in the data. A midfielder stands in a shadow, the ball goes sideways instead of forward, and nothing gets recorded at all. No interception. No pressure. No duel. The most effective thing anybody did in that ten second window leaves no trace whatsoever.

Coaches have known this forever, which is why they talk about cover shadows in language that sounds mystical to people reading spreadsheets. It is not mystical. A holding midfielder standing three yards left of where you would expect removes a specific pass from the game, and the passer, who is a professional and can see, simply stops looking for it. Deterrence.

What follows is predictable. The player doing this well shows up in the numbers as quiet. Few touches. Modest interception counts. Meanwhile a teammate who gambles, misses, and then sprints back to make a spectacular recovery tackle rates beautifully, because failure followed by rescue generates two events and quiet success generates zero.

I would push this further. I suspect a good portion of what gets sold as elite ball winning is poor positioning being bailed out by athleticism, and clubs pay for it because it is legible. The scout can see it. The video can be cut. Still positioning that removed six forward passes across a half cannot be cut into anything, because there is nothing there to show.

The fix is not more data, it is different data. You would need the position of every player and a model of what the passer could plausibly have attempted, then a count of options available against options taken. Some clubs have exactly this and use it quietly. Most public analysis does not and will not, because tracking data is expensive and event data is nearly free.

Until then, be suspicious of any argument about a midfielder that rests entirely on his defensive event counts. Ask a cruder question instead. When he plays, does the opposition make more sideways passes in their own half? That is a blunt proxy and it is still better than most of what gets published.

The best defensive midfielder in a given league might well be the one whose highlight reel is unwatchable.
