Two similar sized defenders make a switch look harmless, and that is precisely why the offence sets the screen in the first place.
Switching a guard screen is not the free out it looks like
Here is the assumption that gets teams beaten. If both offensive players are guards and both defenders are guards, the switch is free. Same height, same speed, no mismatch, take the easy option and get on with the possession.
It is not free, and the offence knows it, which is why the guard to guard screen exists at all.
Start with the obvious part. Size is not the only mismatch. A switch onto the primary creator puts your third best perimeter defender on him with a fresh shot clock and no help committed, and that is a downgrade even if the two men are the same height. Teams that switch everything spend the night quietly conceding the matchup they spent all summer building their perimeter defence to avoid.
Then there is timing, which matters more. Two guards can screen and slip at speed in a way a big man simply cannot. The screener does not have to make contact. He can show the pick, feel the switch call, and cut before the exchange completes, because both defenders are already leaning towards the other man. The half second while a switch is being handed over is the most vulnerable moment in any defence, and it is much easier to attack that window with a quick player than a slow one.
And the rebounding cost is real but delayed. Switch three times in a possession and your centre is now on a guard at the arc while a wing is boxing out under the rim. Nobody notices until the offensive board.
I would defend switching in general. It is the cheapest way to stop giving up open threes, it takes the guesswork out of coverage decisions, and it lets a defence survive fatigue in a way that navigation heavy schemes cannot. What I object to is treating the guard to guard version as the easy case. It is the one you should be most careful with, because the offence chose it deliberately and there is no size mismatch afterwards to warn you that anything went wrong.
The healthy version of switching involves refusing some of them. If your team switches everything, the scouting report writes itself in about ten minutes.
