The three-point arc is not a natural feature of a basketball court. Its distance was chosen deliberately, and the choice had to balance two opposing failure modes.
Two ways the line could fail
Place the arc too close and the extra point is nearly free. Every offence would drift outside and the interior game would empty out.
Place it too far and nobody shoots from there. The line becomes decoration and the rule changes nothing about how teams attack.
The workable distance sits between those, at a range where a good shooter converts often enough to justify the attempt but not so often that inside play becomes pointless.
Expected value is the underlying arithmetic
A shot is worth its point value multiplied by the chance of making it. A three attempted at a moderate conversion rate can match a much more reliable two.
That equivalence is what the arc's placement is tuned around. The designers were setting the point where the two shot types are roughly comparable in value.
Teams eventually worked the arithmetic out for themselves, which is why long-range volume rose steadily once the analysis became widespread. The rule had sat on the books for years before its value was fully exploited.
The corner is shorter for a geometric reason
A true circle of the required radius would run off the court near the baseline, because the sideline is closer to the basket there than the arc would be.
The solution was to flatten the arc into straight segments along each sideline, leaving the corner three noticeably shorter than the shot at the top.
That shorter distance makes the corner the most efficient spot on the floor, which is why offences work so hard to fill both corners.
Spacing follows directly from the line
Defenders must respect shooters standing beyond the arc, which pulls them away from the basket. The area near the rim opens up as a consequence.
Drives and cuts become viable because the help defence is standing further out. The arc therefore governs the interior game as much as the perimeter one.
Coaches describe this as spacing, and it is really a statement about where defenders are obliged to stand. The arc dictates the geometry and the players simply fill it in.
Adjusting the line adjusts the whole sport
Moving the arc even slightly changes conversion rates, which changes shot selection, which changes where defenders stand. The effects propagate through every phase.
That is why competitions treat the distance as a serious structural decision rather than a cosmetic one. A change of a foot would be felt in every possession.
The line is best understood as a dial controlling the balance between inside and outside play, set once and felt everywhere.
