A cricket pitch is manufactured rather than found. Groundstaff decide months in advance roughly how a surface will play, and the preparation choices explain most of what happens in a match.
Soil composition sets the ceiling
The clay content of the square determines how firmly a pitch binds together and therefore how long it survives sustained play.
High clay content produces a surface that holds together and offers consistent bounce, while looser soils break up earlier and start turning sooner.
Because the square is built over years, this is the one variable groundstaff cannot adjust in the week before a match, and it constrains everything else. Rebuilding a square is a project measured in seasons, not weeks.
Rolling compacts, and compaction means pace
Repeated rolling presses the surface together, producing a hard top that lets the ball skid on and come through at a consistent height.
Rolling also delays deterioration, since a compacted surface resists the footmarks and scuffing that create rough patches for spinners.
The trade-off is that a heavily rolled pitch tends to flatten out entirely, which favours batting and makes a result harder to force. Curators therefore stop short of the compaction they could achieve.
Moisture decides how much the ball moves
Water left in the surface helps the seam grip on landing, producing lateral movement in the opening session and rewarding bowlers who pitch the ball up.
As that moisture evaporates the assistance disappears, which is why the first hour of a match often looks nothing like the third.
Managing the drying rate is the finest judgement in preparation, since a fraction too much moisture can turn a contest into a rout. The judgement is made by feel and experience rather than by instrument.
Grass cover binds the surface and helps seam
Leaving grass on a pitch holds moisture, keeps the surface intact for longer and gives seam bowlers something to work with.
Shaving it off exposes the soil, accelerates drying and brings forward the point at which the surface begins to break up for spin.
The length left on is therefore a direct statement about which bowlers the ground expects to be effective and when. Visiting sides read the covering closely on the morning of a match.
Preparation is judged over the whole match
Groundstaff are not trying to produce a good first day but a surface that changes gradually, giving batting and bowling their turn.
Weather undermines this constantly, since cloud cover, heat and rain all alter the drying schedule after preparation has finished.
That is why identical preparation at the same ground can produce very different matches, and why home advantage is real without being deliberate.
