Empty the corner and the defence runs out of answers

Taking a shooter out of the strong corner makes the same pick and roll harder to guard. Spacing is not only arithmetic.

Spacing usually gets explained as arithmetic. Five shooters, stretched defence, drive into the gaps. Mostly right. Not the whole story, because there is a version of the pick and roll that improves when you remove a shooter from the strong side entirely.

Run the screen on the right wing and leave that corner completely empty. The low man who is supposed to tag the roller now has nobody near him to justify sitting low, and he has to make his rotation across a longer stretch of floor. The corner defender who used to be two steps from the paint is not there, because the man he was guarding is standing on the opposite wing doing nothing. Between the roll man and the rim there is a centre who is already committed and a lot of hardwood.

This is the part I find genuinely strange about how spacing gets discussed. We treat the corner as sacred because the corner three is efficient. But the value of a player standing there is not only the shot he might take, it is the defender he pins. An empty corner removes a shot and removes a defender, and often the second one is worth more than the first.

The cost is real. If the ball handler gets stopped he has nowhere to kick. He has to reverse the ball across the floor off a live dribble under pressure, which is how you get shot clock turnovers and cross court passes intercepted at the top of the key. So this is not a base offence. It is a look you run once the defence has settled into a rotation pattern and you want a specific help defender to do something he has not practised.

The other cost is emotional and nobody admits it. Shooters hate standing in the weak corner watching a play they are not in. They drift. They lift towards the wing because that is where the ball is, and lifting drags their defender back into the play and quietly undoes the whole arrangement.

Coaches who run this well have a rule for the corner man that sounds absurd out of context. Stay there. Do not help the play. Your job tonight is to be far away.

The defence does have an answer. Pre switch the empty side before the screen arrives so the tagger is already close to the rim. When you see that, note it. It means somebody watched a lot of film.
